Due to the epidemic of COVID-19, lectures were all delivered online. Early in the morning, before the beginning of the classes, many students have already been waiting in the online conference room, looking forward to the start of the lectures with much enthusiasm. On the second day of the summer school, we are honored to have Prof. Martin W. King from North Carolina State University, Prof. Qin Xiaohong from Donghua University, Prof. Tao Xuyuan from the ENSAIT Textile Engineering Institute, Roubaix, France, and Prof. Hugh Gong from the University of Manchester with us, inviting them to show the charm and marvel of the textile industry from a very professional perspective for us.
In the first morning class, Professor Martin W. King firstly met with us and brought us the first lecture -- The World of Medical Textiles. He systematically introduced the definition, classifications, markets and applications of medical textiles, vividly showing us all kinds of advanced researches and technologies with concise words and abundant pictures. Despite of those great achievements, Professor Martin W. King also pointed out some challenges we were faced with, and expressed much high hopes for the future. After the lecture, he patiently answered the eager questions from the students one by one. The learning atmosphere was pushed to a climax.
Next, Professor Qin Xiaohong brought us the second lecture. She introduced the general situations of the Textile Department in Donghua University. It not only has a long history of development as well as strong scientific prowess, but also has favorable international cooperation and rich teaching achievements, making Donghua “the cradle of talents in Chinese textile industry”. At the end, Professor Qin Xiaohong encouraged all the students to join Donghua’s warm family.
In the afternoon, topic of intelligent textiles was introduced by Professor Tao Xuyuan. Starting from its history of smart textiles, professor led us opening the door of the world of smart textiles, general surveying on those latest inventions, such as color changing textiles, phase-change materials, shape memory materials and so on. Through playing a series of small videos, Professor Tao Xuyuan broadened our horizon and greatly stimulated our interest of intelligent textiles.
Last but not least, Professor Hugh Gong introduced the knowledge of textile properties to us. Firstly, professor pointed out that unlike some other materials, textile materials have extremely complex properties. Therefore, large series of tests are required in order to master their performance. Moreover, test methods vary from each other and are used in different situations. Different conditions also have an effect on the results. “According to the actual situation, reasonable selection and use of relevant criteria are golden principles of testing textile properties.” Professor Hugh Gong emphasized.
