OnJuly 3rd, the 2026 Shanghai International Textile Graduate SummerSchool officially kicked off. During the opening day events,Professor FREDERIC HEIM delivered an insightful academic presentationcovering cutting-edge latest research advances in textile science andtechnology, while Professor YINGJIAO XU elaborated on marketingstrategies and consumer behavior relevant to the textile industry.

ProfessorFREDERIC HEIM presented the applications and prospects of textilematerials in transcatheter heart valves, with a focused analysis ofthe durability issues of biological tissues in Transcatheter AorticValve Implantation (TAVI). He pointed out that textile materialsfeature high tensile strength, flexibility, foldability andcustomizable design. By tuning fiber parameters and conductingsurface modification, such materials can break through existingtechnical bottlenecks. Multifilament fabrics rely on monofilamentstrength and the packing density of filaments, while nonwoven fabricssuffer from insufficient mechanical strength. Accordingly, combiningwoven and nonwoven layers enables the fabrication of heart valvematerials with excellent flexibility and durability. PLLA/PCL stentsand PCBU materials have demonstrated favorable performance inclinical trials.

ProfessorYINGJIAO XU mainly elaborated on the relationship between textilesand consumer behavior. She opened her lecture with an engagingself-introduction. The first part outlined definitions related to themarket and illustrated the interplay between market and consumers. The second part delivered rigorous quantitative analysis of consumerbehavior. She elaborated on the impacts exerted by external factorssuch as artificial intelligence, population aging and culturaldifferences. In addition, she adopted the SWOT model to analyzestrengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats in marketing. Duringbrand positioning, enterprises ought to select the most promisingmarket segments as targets and build distinctive brand images todifferentiate their products from competitors. Consumer behavior canbe interpreted through a three-dimensional model consisting ofBuying, Having and Being. With comprehensive and in-depth content, this course helps participants construct a complete systematicresearch framework ranging from macro market environments down tomicro consumer psychology. She emphasized self-directed learning anddesigned group ice-breaking activities to help participants getacquainted with one another. Such icebreakers serve more than justacquaintance-building; they also guide students to reflect on how toestablish links with their own academic majors.
